Description
The illegal traffic of oversized 53-foot Special Dimension Vehicles (SDV) tractor-trailers continues hourly through the downtown and at the Washington St & Broadway intersection. These rigs are not sanctioned for our downtown and anyone standing on that corner or sitting in Starbucks can watch trucks climbing the sidewalk making their way up Washington. A few years back, the city dropped the curbs and prohibited parking at this corner, benefiting the trucks over the pedestrians. It's time to put the trucks back on their DOT designated routes. Anyone seeing the numbers 53 on a trailer in town is watching an illegal truck. If PS started occasionally checking manifests (for through trucking of all trucks) and watching out for the big 53 SDV, much of this traffic would fade by way of the truckers’ grapevine.

If proper Truck Route signage were posted then that could be enforced. Trucks between Exit 15 and Route 29 should go via West Ave/Van Dam St and the Rt 50 Arterial. There are NO signs to designate this and thru trucks not familiar with the city will just go how their GPS units send them. Not the first time this issue has been brought up. It's any easy fix with a few signs but good luck getting the DOT to post them.

I was a part-time truck driver until recently and if I did not live here I wouldn't know about downtown. I personally did not have a GPS unit but I only drove locally. There are commercial GPS units out there but I do not know if they have the preferred route programmed. Never saw the DOT map you refer to and I have been driving for 25 years. Not likely there could be legitimate enforcement without the signs. I would certainly fight any citation to that effect.

When I moved up here over 20 years ago this was an issue even back then. There used to be these enormous trucks filled with logs trying to navigate their way through town and I could never figure out where the sawmill was in the city.
The laws to mitigate this issue are on the books. Many of these trucks have legitimate business to conduct in town but it seems impossible that they all do.

Till the city or ps decides that it can make a difference nothing will change. Washington street and broadway are not sanctioned dot sdv routes.
