This intersection needs a traffic light. Both Orange St. and Canner St. are major thoroughfares for this area. There's considerable pedestrian traffic too, including people disembarking from the Yale Shuttle Orange Line stop. I have seen so many near misses - this is a fatality waiting to happen.
3 months ago I saw a big car collision here (one car pulled in front of one barreling down Orange St) as I was riding along Orange on my bike. Today I watched as a couple + dog tried to cross the intersection while cars converged and cut in from every direction. To add to the danger, visibility was reduced on both sides thanks to a minivan parked on a no-parking spot on the SW corner of the intersection and a UPS truck on the other side. Even w/o them it would have been difficult to cross given the high speed and sheer volume of cars coming on Orange St.

Seems like an in-street sign would be useful here.
I used to live at this corner and agree that it could get out of hand at times, particularly with the occasional late-night speeders trying to accelerate in order to hit the green light at Cold Spring.

I don't think a light would help -- the corners with the lights are actually more dangerous, since people run them.
I used to have to go through the Willow/Orange intersection daily since I lived at Canner and was almost hit by a driver blatantly running a red light - in one case, about 10 seconds after it changed - on two occasions.
Instead of a light, slowing traffic with traffic calming such as the curb extensions and raised crosswalks shown here, plus a permanent in-street sign (or pedestrian refuge median) would be the most effective technique for improving safety.

I saw that in-road yield to pedestrian signs have been placed all around Southern Connecticut State University. I saw several there this past weekend.
1 What's taking these so long for the ones on Orange Street and State to be put back in service?
2 Will a sign be added at Canner & Orange?
