What’s the point of an alarm that (a) no one monitors or (b) no one can figure out how to turn off? Hope there is not a fire or that no one is stealing the copper pipes.
Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore—
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over—
like a syrupy sweet?
BEWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOP! BEWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOP!
My daughter awoke this morning complaining that this alarm kept her up last night. She's a kid who would normally sleep through an earthquake. In fact she HAS slept through earthquakes. More than 24 hours this alarm has been going off, why hasn't it been quieted yet? PLEASE, BOE or whoever, turn off the alarm!
The alarm has been vanquished. Pick the best reason for this conclusion. (a) the vandals stole the handle, or sat least the speaker, (b) the battery died, (c) the school burned down, or (d) somebody got back from a day out of town.

(With apologies to Langston Hughes.)
What happens to an alarm deferred?
Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore—
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over—
like a syrupy sweet?
Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.
Or does it explode?
