Denton, the City's responses to SCF is pathetic, at best. They didn't even give you the correct contact. This area is covered by the Southwest District, not Downtown, and the number is (919) 996-6167. If you call Downtown, they'll just refer you to Southwest.

Perhaps a possible solution here is for citizens to write down license plates of vehicles clearly lacking a muffler, then report to RPD (who admittedly have more important things to do than find these miscreants) but if they live in Raleigh, they can be visited and vehicles visually inspected, which, under NCGS §20-128(a), should suffice to issue a ticket. Problem is there's no assurance RPD will do this. Maybe the Sherrif's office or Highway Patrol would be better for these home visits.

You're right, of course. It'd be so much easier for RPD simply to look and see there's no muffler on the rip-snorter and then issue the ticket they ought to, under NCGS §20-128(a).

I moved out of Raleigh in November specifically to get away from this nuisance. I still work in Raleigh and I hate it. I hate having to take a lunch because it means leaving the building and exposing myself to the myriad of illegally equipped cars, trucks and motorcycles that blast through Atlantic Ave. I hate life and I hate this state because of this noise problem.

I see and hear far more “squatted” trucks with loud exhaust than anything else. I know these violate the N.C. state safety inspection for the headlight aiming alone. Most people with muscle cars are respectful of noise, I know I am. But kids are a different story...

I think peoples idea of being "respectful of noise" with their cars is extremely subjective. The bottom line is that the law states the exhaust must be of the type isntalled at time of manufacture. If it has been replaced with a type that is louder than the one which comes with it from the factory, it is illegal. All other exhaust systems are suitable for use on tracks, not public roadways. Unfortunately our law enforcement does nothing to enforce this law. However I do believe the more people complain the faster we will get more enforcement and possibly tighter enforcement during safety inspections. I am also an ex NC DMV inspector and I believe this law needs to be enforced and tweaked to catch this problem during inspections.

Meesh. Exhaust systems are built to specifications. It is a trivial matter to compare the specifications of a currently installed exhaust system to that of the listed manufacture equipped system. I can see how this puts a burden on the police to perform but it should not for inspectors considering that is exactly their job, to know the difference.

Many inspectors sell and/or install exhaust components. They're not going to want to sell OEM only. It's not in their economic interest. Type of muffler is not nearly as important as NO muffler.

I just went through the first 5 pages of issues on this site while observing the number of votes for each issue. This issue of noise from vehicles has the most votes, by almost double, than any other issues (from the first 5 pages). So why is this not being given more serious attention?
