Thank you once again for reporting this issue. The reported section of roadway is under State jurisdiction. This issue was forwarded to MassDOT to address.

Update:
MassDOT has reported putting in an internal work order at their sign shop requesting a sign (Turning Vehicles Yield to Pedestrians) be fabricated for this location. The sign will be installed once completed and Dig Safe marks the location.

MassDOT - The location has a MBTA bus stop sign post and a Pole for the stop light right where you would want to locate a sign. So the street light pole may be perfect and not require any digging. Thanks for the sign I hope it will help.

Mayor Arrigo - Maybe once the sign is up you can request the Police Dept to spend a few hours on a couple of different days down on that location and pulling cars over that violate the warning and give them a verbal warning so help make sure that drivers will know this is a dangerous area and to be careful. Thank you Mass DOT I see the sign is up already. That was very quick. Now hopefully after a few days maybe drivers will slow down when taking that right turn on red.

Mr. Mayor, can you send a policeman down to the location, in the afternoon rush hour between 4 - 6 PM, after the sign has been up a week or two and help to enforce the restrictions by handing out warnings to motorists who drive too fast through that turn when on a red light. Thanks for your help.

I had planned to write about this again. Unfortunately the issue has not been solved. Some drivers have been slowing down but there are still too many drivers who do not have a green arrow to turn and race through that intersection at dangerous speeds. I don't know if the sign is too complicated for them and they need one of those old yellow signs that says "slow crossing" or if we need an additional walk sign facing toward the traffic so they can see the walk signal is on and to slow or stop.

Again the complication is that because of the layout of the corner cars in the turning lane can't see the walk sign is on and they speed through the turn. I know that about a year ago a woman was hit in that exact spot. So this is a problem that needs a solution. If I am not explaining this clearly I would be happy to meet with someone at the spot to show what the problem is.

I also want to that Mass DOT for putting up their sign so quickly. Unfortunately it hasn't resulted in a material change.

I think that only real solution is to place a speed bump on that corner. It will slow down that turn significantly. I have also seen people speeding using right lane and then merging into a left lane.

That certainly would solve the problem. I had hoped they could create an easier solution, like a flashing light facing up Winthrop Ave. when the OK to cross lights are on so drivers know to stop at crosswalk. But I agree there is a lot of driver abuse of that right lane, speeding through, jumping ahead of the left lane to go straight down Winthrop Ave into Beachmont. The speed bump would have to be just in front of the crosswalk right in front of the T station to be effective in stopping cars from endangering people crossing in front of the T station..

I think raised crosswalk would create best scenario. I have seen them in Summerville. Lights are not big deterrent.

I traded emails with Joe Gravellese from City Hall trying to get an update if this is still an issue being worked on or if MassDOT has given up on any additional solutions. So far I haven't received a definite reply as to the status of this problem. But I hope that City Hall is working with MassDOT to find an acceptable solution that works without being overly expensive. I know people have been hit by cars while walking in the crosswalk in front of the Beachmont T station, but I don't know how many. I may try to call the Police station and see how hard it would be to get some statistics on how many people have been injured there in the last two or three years.

People need to learn how to cross the street. 99.9% of the time they cross againt the signal. Nobody every pushes the button. We need some big fluorescent signs pointing out what to do. Start giving tickets for J-Walking.

Carol, I agree there are many people who just trust that walking in a crosswalk even when the don't walk sign is on will protect them from being struck by an automobile. With all we know about being distracted while driving, texting while driving, etc I think these people take unnecessary risks. But my issue is that cars go through the intersection and turn right onto Bennington Street at speed even when the OK to walk sign is on. This is the problem I am trying to get fixed.

Please keep this open. I hope to speak to MassDOT this week to see if we can get them to make a visit to the intersection.
