When is the City of Virginia Beach going to enter the 21st century and install sensors on the traffic lights along Virginia Beach Blvd. from Rosemont Road east to Great Neck Road. The traffic lights along that few mile section are timed in phases that are ridiculously long. They waste fuel and time for drivers especially when little or no traffic is approaching from any direction. I've actually seen the east/west bound traffic lights at the intersection where the Acura dealership is located change to red at nearly 1:00AM in the morning and I sat and waited for nearly two minutes for the light to change. I also notice other drivers avoiding the left turn lanes because the lights seem to never change - I avoid the left turn lane that turns south on Kings Grant and travel instead to the left turn further west that has no light. I can make a u-turn at that spot and make it all the way back to the Kings Grant intersection and still see the same people I passed waiting in the left turn lane - this is simply ridiculous! As important as fuel consumption and air pollution issues are today, there is no excuse that justifies the length of the light phases in this city. I lived in Fort Worth, Texas for 45 years and I visit once a year. The traffic in Fort Worth is three times as congested as that in VA Beach and their light phases have been shortened so that drivers don't feel as if they are sitting forever for traffic to move. I don't know about other drivers, but my pet peeve is sitting at a traffic light when there are no cars coming through the intersection off the side streets. Timed lights are relics of the past and need to be updated to sensor-based signals.
