There is a street cleaning crew on upper Thames every day - perhaps they could extend the work to the passage way. If not, hire a prisoner caught DWI and doing public service.

I went down to clear it out today but it was already done.

the graffiti solution I will look into.

I just checked it again this past Sunday 30 August 2010. The trash has returned along with an increasing pile of dead leaves, surely to grow as fall progresses. And the graffiti remains unchanged.

With regard to the latter (graffiti) perhaps the city should do as they do in EU and UK. It's done wonders there for tube trains and outlying areas: sponsor a graffiti contest to choose a design, then turn the artist loose to do his work and get recognition. Which is what they're after anyhow.

Progress, however slight... They have now schwacked the overgrowth. But grafitti and grwoing piles of leaves remain, as of 26 Sep 10

There is still more progress: the neighbor next door has cleared the overgrowth and someone has painted most of the graffiti away, and "JJ" (pictured) was out there sweeping up on a Sunday morning. But there is yet more work to do, mostly to finish off the graffiti.

Well, hello. Someone has finally come up with the solution: Install a steel gate on both ends, padlocked.

Woohoo!! Well done City of Newport. Now the little blue-haired ladies trying to get to church from their car at the top of the Mary Street can get their exercise walking THREE CITY BLOCKS to get to mass.

They unlocked the gates, at least for last Sunday, so the little bluehairs can get to church without the hike.

But they still need to clean up the leaves...

There has to be a solution. Video camera surveillance? The leaves are an act of nature, but the graffiti and filth are not. What do the neighbors know?

Unfortunately the issue continues. The city could put a surveillance camera and a loudspeaker connected to a surveillance station, I suppose, but they seem to have other priorities.

Andy, what does Kristen L. say about this? They do have an anti-graffiti paint that they will be applying to the Hunter Park mural when completed - perhaps this could help.

Church street in wonderful historic hill has ben "tagged" all the way down and really looks bad.It brings down the property value and looks bad to tourists and locals alike. We MUST find out who is doing this. Resident volunteers watching during late night hours (I'd be happy to take a shift) and/or cameras running in areas that are repeatedly hit? It's infuriating.

Re: new tagging ... I noticed several spots all across the Point with new "tags." I'll take some photos and send to PD.
