Minimizing landfill gas odors is a top priority of ACUA and the Authority deeply regrets any inconvenience caused by this incident.

Although ACUA does everything in its power to minimize odor impacts, certain weather conditions can make this task extremely challenging.

Unfortunately, recent seasonal weather fluctuations, including snow, freezing temperatures, thawing, rain and unseasonably warm weather over past week have caused excessive condensation to build up in ACUA’s landfill gas collection system. The excessive condensation builds up inside of the collection system to the point where the system experiences decrease vacuum pressure in the well field, and this can result in detectable odors. Earlier this morning, the system was temporarily shut down to allow the condensation to properly drain back into the landfill.

Managing landfill gas is dynamic 24-hour per day process. ACUA is doing everything in its power to address the situation and hopes to have these condensate issues resolved by the end of the workday today.
