Police said a man and woman in the minivan were taken to an area hospital. Their conditions were not immediately available.
The elderly couple in the Marquis were pronounced dead at the scene.
Nathan Sitto and his cousin said they tired to help the victims.
"We knew that they weren't going to make it because of the way they looked," he said. "We went running to the van and my cousin at the liquor store called the cops as soon as he could. It's just a tragedy, you know?"
The intersection has a light with left turn indicators in red, flashing yellow, solid yellow and green. Police have not said if the light caused any confusion but Sitto, who works near the intersection, said crashes have become a common occurrence.
"This traffic light has been going on for a while, but ever since we've been here we've been seeing car accidents," he said. "It's getting worse and worse every day."
Fellow witness Maher Jawad said he sees crashes at the same intersection several times a month.

reading the story it doesn't sound as if the lights in this particular accident were a factor, however there has definitely been an increase in intersections where these new "intelligent" lights have been installed. Shelby Police mentioned it on their local weekly news report.
Would love to find out the actual statistics on it though.

According to 2010 accident statistics published in Shelby/Utica News on March 9th,:
23 mile & Schoenherr accidents INCREASED 30% from 2009 to 2010 (49 to 64)
21 Mile & Schoenherr, accidents INCREASED 50% from 2009 to 2010 (34 to 51)
Sgt. Cazabon of Shelby Police: "We're seeing an increase in the number of accidents...at all intersections where they have the new lights up".
Yet they keep claiming that these lights are "SAFER" and more "EFFICIENT"?????
There are MORE accidents...statistics don't lie! Traffic backups, particularly at the 23/Schoenherr and 22/Hayes intersections, have INCREASED since they were installed, s
keep in mind when looking at the numbers...they are comparing 2009 to 2010. These lights were only installed in the fall of 2010. So you've got increases of 34%-50% in just a few months! I can only imagine what the numbers will be after these lights have been installed for a full year!
