Description

Back in April 2012, a citizen wrote to Gripe Vine regarding the lack of sidewalks "on either side of Ocean Avenue from Robert Street to Harding Street and it is very dangerous for adults and children walking". The response was that "we're in limbo at this point. If you don't see any activity on this site within a month, let me know and I will start from square one." That was over a year and a half ago, and there has been dead silence and no change. People with baby carriages, those who are in wheelchairs or otherwise require assistance walking, and anyone else who just wants to walk is forced to negotiate lumpy dirt/snow, walk through someone's yard, or walk on Ocean Avenue, where they will probably be hit by a speeding car. Why is it so hard for the City of West Haven to put in what amounts to approximately 100 feet of sidewalk? This complaint has been issued by many people over decades, yet nothing has been done.

Now that we have a new mayor, would it be possible to get sidewalks that the good citizens of West Haven have been asking for FOR DECADES? Ms. Turkington has heard from a number of people about this, so we no longer should have to ask her this same question.

This issue is incredibly frustrating. We really do need expanded sidewalks. A designated bike lane would be good, too. I have ridden there more than a few times and have nearly gotten hit by motorists.

I moved here from New Haven where walking and cycling were encouraged. It would be great to see some of that same attitude imported here. Not only does this encourage people to get out and exercise and be healthier, but it is better for the shoreline and air quality around the Sound. Cars belch out a lot of carbon dioxide and other pollutants and runoff that make their way into the Sound.

Mr DJ, I'm glad to finally hear someone who agrees that West Haven needs to be a whole lot friendlier to bicycles and pedestrians. Cars on Ocean Avenue don't even slow down when they see people trying to cross the street, much less stop. Two dogs who lived in houses on Ocean Avenue were struck by cars and killed in a residential area, and last year a young man lost his life there as well. We need to change the racecar culture around here. Let's hope the new Mayor and the new Commissioner of Public Works share our sensibilities. It's not that hard to make it work.

And it's not just Ocean Ave, of course. I walk my dog along Beach St every morning and evening, and I don't recall the last time, summer or winter, I saw a patrol car monitoring for speeding. For that matter, I think it's been years since I saw one of those units that tell you your speed; last year they had one at various points along First Ave, but once they got to the bottom of First Ave, they were done. This is a popular route for bypassing the lights and stop signs along Elm. People heading east come around the corner at Washington Ave and from there on it's pedal-to-the-metal, foot-to-the-wood. God help any of us who step into one of the crosswalks; despite the signs and the law, the drivers will often blare their horns at your audacity to exercise your rights as a pedestrian.

PUT IN A SIDEWALK ALREADY! YOU SPEND MILLIONS ON SAND THAT JUST WASHES AWAY, SO WHY CAN'T WE HAVE TWO BLOCKS OF SIDEWALK ON A MAIN ROAD?

Sidewalk repairs need to be done now, prior to the winter season. This would be an easy fix if the town had sidewalks on the repairs agenda. I have not seen any sidewalk repairs being done in a while. Not anywhere in town.

And it's no wonder, given that the city seems to find grooming beaches a more important place to spend money than fixing sidewalks.

The mayor is aware of this issue and chooses to ignore it. Now he wants to build a cell phone tower where there should be sidewalks. This is the kind of backward thinking that keeps West Haven from being a desirable place for people to live or even as a vacation destination. A sidewalk would link West Haven to Milford's beautiful Woodmont neighborhood, providing several miles of pedestrian- and bike-friendly paths. This is a beach town! Get with the program, Mayor O'Brien! Get outside and take a walk and see what it's like!

Would you take a child in a stroller in the street here? That's the only option, since THERE IS NO SIDEWALK ON EITHER SIDE. Why is this so hard to fix?
