Description
A new traffic signal has been installed at the railroad grade crossing on Grand Ave just east of the intersection of Grand Ave and East Street. I'm guessing the purpose is to prevent people from stopping on the tracks when the signal at Grand and East is red. But this new signal turns red far too early, leaving motorists and cyclists sitting arbitrarily at a red signal while less than 100 feet in front of them the signal at Grand and East remains green.
Since this signal was installed, I've already seen several near collisions as some motorists stop at the railroad crossing while others attempt to drive around and through the intersection.
This signal should turn red at the same time as the signal at Grand and East, or at most about 3 seconds earlier, the amount of time it takes to get from the RR crossing to the East St intersection.
As it is set up now, it is causing unnecessary congestion, confusion, and an unsafe condition.

Nothing has been done about this. The most absurd thing about this is that a protected left-turn signal has been installed at the intersection of Grand and East Street in the westbound direction. Unfortunately, it cannot be used because it doesn't activate until after the railroad crossing signal is red, meaning that no one can reach the East St intersection.
The solution that most people have arrived at is to ignore the light completely, and run right through it if the light at East St is still green. I have seen many people do this, and I have done it myself. I will continue to do it if the city is not competent enough to solve this problem on their own. Didn't the city just receive a federal grant to fix signal timing? Why does it seem worse than ever? And for that matter, how many trains use this crossing anyway? This new traffic signal seems entirely unwarranted.
