Description
WM was picking up the recycling this morning in a regular trash truck and using the compactor on it along 5th street. I have seen this before and called JCIA and they told me to call WM. The woman who had answered the phone confirmed that they are not supposed to compact recyclables. They will not be able to process it. So our recycling efforts are wasted and the city doesn't get their recycling 'revenue'.
Note that this was not a case of poorly separated trash. The regular trash and the paper pick ups had already occurred on this street.

Please be advised that although compactor trucks are used for garbage they can also be used for recycling (as long as it is a different truck i.e. they cannot be mixed). it seems to me that you were misinformed.
These compactor trucks are used because they are most efficient method for collection both garbage and recycling materials in such a large City with a high volume. In fact this does not diminish the marketing value of such recyclables (i.e mixed paper and/or commingled materials). When these recycling materials are disposed of at the recycling facility each commodity is bailed and shipped to end market overseas.
As you know one of our main goals is to increase recycling within our City, therefore, we would not allow anything to affect the process of recycling collection.
Should you have any questions feel free to contact me at 201-432-4645 ext. 625 (in the future should you contact our office please get a name so that we can be of better assistance).

Crystal,
Thank you for responding. I understand that either truck can be used. The information that was given to me by WM was that they should not be compacting the recyclables, it was not about the specific truck they should be using.
I don't understand how plastic, glass, and metal can be compacted, then separated. If this is in fact the process, then why is JCIA against bagging recyclables? It seems it doesn't really matter.
Thanks for your help!
