Speed Limit signs indicate a speed of 25 MPH while going over the newly installed speed bumps on Northbrook Dr. That IS NOT a safe speed to go over those bumps. Either the signs need to be changed to a lower speed or the speed bumps need to be made smaller.

Welcome to the group! This issue has been raised independently by 3 total people, including myself, over the last 6 weeks. The City refuses to perform any remediation, even going so far as to claim that these humps meet their specs., while everyone can plainly see that they are excessive and counterproductive. In fact, they were installed in violation of the City's own rule stating that speed humps are not to be considered on any street having a traffic count over 4,000 / day. Their own traffic count was 4,150 / day. Television coverage, newspaper coverage, and appearance before the City Council have all been to no avail.

The SPEED LIMIT does not mean you have to go that speed. It simply means that it is illegal to go over that speed. If you don't feel safe going 25 over the traffic calming humps then don't. Drive a speed that you feel safe going over them.

The speed on the signs is NOT a limit. The speed limit is 30 mph. 25 mph is the advised speed to safely negotiate the hump. The reason for this is so someone unfamiliar with the area does not attempt to continue at 30 mph, and cause damage to their vehicle, person, or surrounding area. The City has finally repaired (after 4 months of harassment!) the hump area closest to North Hills Drive. It is now probably safe for most vehicles at 25 mph.

I'm a fan of the speed bumps just bring the speed limit down to 20mph on the whole road. The area is mailboxes, driveways and an elementary school so 20mph is enough.

And we could have someone with a red flag walk in front of each car like they did 120 years ago! Forgive my sarcasm, but Northbrook is simply not a neighborhood byway. The fact that over 4,000 cars per day traversed it would indicate that it is a major connector between North Hills Drive and Six Forks. Lowering the speed limit to 30 from 35 was plenty of accomodation to safety.

I notice that this issue has not been acknowledged by the city. Incidentally, the hump at 801 Northbrook is over 3 1/2 inches high on the North side and full of scrape marks from cars crossing it. The height should not exceed 3 1/4 inches according to previous response from Fiorello to a citizen inquiry. I would think that 6 months after installation is enough time to correct these ridiculous obstructions!

Another month has gone by with no improvement to the speed hump situation. I don't think it is unreasonable for the City's staff to at least admit the humps are inaccurate, and attempt to bring them into compliance. All three are higher than 3 1/4 inches on one or both sides of the street, and the abruptness is beyond any reasonable amount..

Still no reply from the city! And, of course, no changes to the humps after the street was repaired next to the one. All three need to be worked on to bring them into compliance with the city drawings and previously stated maximum height. This "ostrich" stance of ignoring the problems is really not acceptable.

I did something productive, I addressed the City Council five months ago on the subject. The seeclickfix is intended to do what you suggest without tying up presumably busy public servants on the phone.

Still no update. I went to the neighborhood seminar at State and queried tthe Traffic Calming Coordinater about why he insisted upon installing humps on Northbrook in spite of the city rules on traffic volume, and why they are wildly out of spec. As you can imagine, I got only a dirty look for answers.

It must be embarassing to be a "verified official" and be ignored as thoroughly as we ordinary citizens have been! Rather than ignoring us, why not at least tell us about the new asphalt mix and profile specified for the latest victim streets, such as Cranbrook? I had to research the city website to discover this.

Per Public Works, we will be putting in a change order to this year’s contract to remove & replace the speed hump by 921 Northbrook.

And with what will it be replaced? If it is a cement raised crosswalk like the one in front of the school, it might be acceptable. If it is another asphalt abortion, not so much. This speed hump was replaced once before, allegedly due to the poor condition of the street it was cleverly built upon.

This is in the Public Works Committee of the Raleigh City Council. No update available at this time, and no need for this to be addressed via SeeClickFix since it is in the purview of the City Council. Closing issue.

If it is in the Public Works Committee, then they need to add it to their agenda. I sincerely hope this is the case, since I have been after our Council to investigate the entire traffic calming operation. The fraudulant Laurel Hills petition and the Northbrook malpractice are only symptoms of a larger problem.
