Hmmmm....having walked past the rear entrance to the fire station on Harrington st. I'm pretty sure those big trucks can't fit up the small alley. I agree with Henry and obviously, he is correct judging by Devon's post. No appreciation for first responders. They are nothing more than a burden until you are the one calling 911. Tsk, tsk.
I live a block away and can attest to Henry's concern as twice a day I walk past the fire station heading to and from work. Drivers are so impatient and aggressively approach the fire truck in what seems like an attempt to hurry up the firemen. Poor guys.
I, too, think a stop bar and maybe a "Stop here" sign would help.
Please help keep our first responders safe so they can go home to their families!!!

Well Kendra, having lived next to this Fire Station for many years I can promise you there is room for them to fit up that roadway. I've seen them do it many times. This has nothing to do with *appreciation* for first responders as it does for traffic safety, predictability on the road, and general common sense. Nobody can anticipate a fire truck to randomly stop and start reversing in the middle of traffic. Please. Oh someone think of the children in those CARS that suddenly have to slam on their brakes for a fire truck reversing against one way traffic. Please make the roads safer for them so they can go home to their families.

I have to disagree with you also, Devon. I watched the big truck back into the station this morning and the process is nothing as you describe. The truck pulled off the road with it's red lights flashing out of the flow of traffic. The firefighters disembarked the vehicle on the passenger side and were not in the road. The driver then pulled the truck perpendicular to the flow of traffic while the traffic was stopped for the stop light at Hargett st. As soon as the truck stopped to prepare to reverse into the station the light turned green releasing the flood gate. Although nobody blew the horn or tried to drive around this morning I have witnessed this aggressive behavior multiple times. The truck DID NOT just start reversing on a one-way street causing drivers to slam their brakes as you describe nor have I ever witnessed this type of action. It doesn't even make sense.
So after the fire truck parked I asked the firemen why couldn't they pull in from the back. The guys were nice and understanding and actually appreciated someone showing concern for their safety. They explained to me the difference between the pumper and ladder truck. There are 2 pumpers and 1 ladder truck at this station which is what I saw back in. They said during the weekend one of the pumpers could indeed pull in from the rear. However, during the week cars park in the alley preventing this from happening. The other pumper does not have rear door access preventing it from using the alley. The big ladder truck is simply too big to make the turn into the alley and couldn't fit down the alley with cars parked there.
So, Devon Smith, it would be nice if you showed a little more appreciation and understanding for our first responders instead of having the attitude you demonstrated through ingorance that they are nothing more than an inconvenience to you.

I also dont understand why the fire truck drivers cant do like a 3 point turn on all that space they have in front of the station on the sidewalk and where the parking area is, seriously. But thats just my opinion.

WOW...just wow!! A 3-point turn? Obviously you haven't seen how big that truck is. The truck barely fits from the front of the station to the OTHER side of Dawson street. I think it's pretty pathetic someone took it upon their self to CLOSE this issue based on a decision made out of ignorance. Why not let the officials make the decision to close this issue? I think this is an issue. Really it's not much different than the issues with the crosswalk on Wilmington st. i.e. forced to dodge impatient drivers while having to be in the street. Very sad the lack of respect some people have for others especially those who put their life on the line without even knowing them. Henry merely suggested a stop bar (which, by the way, is nothing more than a white line painted on the road) and possibly a sign be installed to help protect those who help us and look at the controversy it has started.

I am asking that you stop closing my request. Just because you don't agree with it doesn't give you the right to denounce my concerns. Your concern about the crosswalk on Wilmington st is more of a police matter than mine. Your crosswalk is clearly marked. All I'm requesting is for a simple stop bar to be installed. Once one is in place and cars continue to drive erratically then it becomes a police matter.

Putting a stop bar in the middle of the road when there is a stop light right there? Doesnt make any sense but ok lets wait until Raleigh gets round to seeing this post and making a comment

You are right which is just sad. Our public safety workers not only can't get a raise or even back in a fire truck safely without impatient drivers trying to run them over but when someone makes a simple request to have a line painted on the street with the hopes of keeping them a little safer people get upset about that and want to close the request.

Obviously the City of Raleigh doesn't even care about their own employees!

How ignorant are you though? You say that drivers are supposed to anticipate coming across a fire truck pulling back against traffic and reversing perpendicularly off of the road? This is abnormal behavior and there should be some middle ground here. People in the cars are in danger. Its unpredictable road behavior. I never once said first responders shuldnt be respected but so must drivers!

Devon, I suggest reading my first response to you as obviously you haven't read it yet. The actual events which transpire when a fire truck backs into the station is nothing like you describe. From what I witnessed it appears the firefighters are trying to be as safe as possible and DO NOT back against cars nor do they pull out in front of cars. It was the cars that make the situation unsafe because of their lack of patience due to being "inconvenienced".

I am closing the issue on behalf of the city. They are looking into it. They are not interested in the issue on this website. Stop reopening the issue when the city has already addressed it in person.

The City's Traffic Engineering Staff consulted with the Fire Department and it was determined that additional traffic control measures are not needed at this time.

The City does ask that drivers be patient while these trucks back into the station (a process that only takes a minute or two) and be aware that there are firefighters in the road to help direct the trucks.
