My wife and I have been almost hit while driving our car. Even more dangerous are individuals who are unfamiliar with the intersection and assume wrongly that everyone has a stop. We've narrowly missed collisions while in cabs. Making matters worse are the drivers who speed to get through the light at the Florida/WV ave intersection. Very dangerous for peds and anyone traveling N/S on 9th.
Having lived all over DC for the past 30 years, I can sadly but confidently say this is one of the more dangerous and accident prone intersections I have had to navigate.
I live near this intersection and cross the street regularly (both West Virginia and Eighth). Would love to see something done to this intersection to make it safer for pedestrians and drivers. Many people speed through West Virginia without looking both ways or mistakenly assume that they have the right of way.
Without a doubt, a dangerous intersection at times. Prior to installation of a 4-way stop, it may be beneficial to study the potential traffic congestion issues surrounding addition of stop signs on a busy intersection such as 8th street and K/WV. If traffic congestion would significantly worsen, additional signage notifying or drawing vehicles on West Virginia that it is NOT a 4-way stop may be a solid first step towards significantly reduce the number of close calls and accidents while simultaneously preventing a new source of traffic congestion.
I want to add that you have to pull so far out into the intersection to see whether or not cars are coming South on 8th that it makes it incredibly dangerous for drivers and pedestrians.
This intersection is dangerous for drivers, pedestrians, and bikers. You have to pull too far into the intersection as a driver to safely cross 8th Street on West Virginia. Something needs to be done at this intersection as well as the intersection at 9th, L St, and West Virginia.
