The new lights by Smoke Jack are a great safety addition. However the sign message to drivers needs to be revised.

When the pedestrian activates the lights and the lights go red, all vehicls are to stop. That is clear. However, it is my understanding that once the lights turn to flashing red vehicls are free to continue travel as long as pedestrians are not present in the crosswalk. There are no sign instructions to drivers that they may proceed once the crosswalk is cleared.

New signs need to be errected to give guidance to drivers so that vehicls do not stack up while waiting for the flashing red lights to stop yet the crosswalk has long been cleared.

I experienced this pedestrian light yesterday while driving south on Main. There was a line of cars, probably 4 or 5, ahead of me, all waiting for the red light to stop flashing. The only sign I notice tells drivers to stop at the line on red.......no info as to what to do when the red is flashing. How do we educate drivers? You said signage is regulated. Does that mean that no information may be posted as to what is legal at a flashing red light? Obviously most people forgot what they learned to get their license when they were 16.

The City is petitioning the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) to allow us to install signage similar to that pictured so as to better instruct drivers. While this type of signage would seem a logical solution, it is not a GDOT approved form. Thus, we have to go through a process to receive permission to use it; especially on a state highway.
