The narrow sidewalk on Upton Dr. is used by walkers, skaters, strollers and bikers. Summertime it is overgrown with hedges and shrubs and grass so that in places you only have half a walk.Opposite side of road is land that is unused and plenty big enough to have a wider walkway that everyone can use. The walk that we have now sets right off the Upton Drive traffic that always exceeds the 35mph speed limit. This has become a safety issue for everyone using this walk.

City staff investigated your concerns. In regard to speeding on Upton Drive, the First Police Precinct will provide radar enforcement to address this issue.
You mentioned hedges and shrubs encroaching onto the sidewalk that make it difficult to use more than half of the existing sidewalk. Work to trim back this vegetation was completed by the Sheriff’s Workforce August 31, 2011. This area will be monitored for any future problems.
In regard to the request for a sidewalk along the east side of Upton Drive, the sidewalk along the east side terminates just south of Culver Lane, and there is approximately 4,000 feet of gap in the sidewalk toward Nimmo Parkway. Staff found this section of Upton Drive is included in the City’s Comprehensive Plan for a four-lane undivided major collector road with a five to ten-foot shared use path on both sides. However, there is no schedule available for programming this project at this time. If an interim project were recommended to install the missing sidewalk, it would compete against similar projects on the Traffic Safety Improvements list. Since there is an existing sidewalk along the west side of Upton Drive, this project would be ranked low compared to other roadways on the list that have no sidewalk on either side of the road.
I hope this information is helpful. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have additional questions or concerns.
