Thank you for sharing this info. I know that people who commit these petty crimes are usually in poverty, but stealing random items that are probably not that useful to the thief either financially or just directly, at a huge cost of money and inconvenience to their neighbors is really just repugnant and, I think, inexcusable. I have had medications stolen, important work items, and things with sentimental value that were irreplaceable but basically worth nothing all stolen by these mail thieves that about in JC. It needs to stop! I want to JCPD to put substantial effort into stopping this!!
I'm so sorry this happened to you. I hope whatever was stolen is something you can replace.
What I've personally experienced is that my building won't give me camera footage without a police report and the police won't make a report without camera footage, especially if the theft is of low relatively low monetary value.
I'm glad the penalties have been increased though. Thank you for the information. Do you have a link to any further info from where this was reported to the public? I would love to hear more about the city's plan to address the package theft issue.
I don't know of any city plan to address package theft. A few years ago -- perhaps four? They had a program where they put GPS devices in dummy packages and arrested the people who took them. It was very successful. Since then package theft has become a full-time profession for many in the city, and the police don't seem to put any priority on these crimes.

The new law is state:

I think maybe the neighborhood associations should put some pressure on the mayor to address this issue. It's costing millions, all told.
