I AGREE 100 %!!

Last week I drove by, what must have happened seconds before I got there, a person lying on the ground with cars stopped and people on cell phones. This was another Wesleyan student not paying attention and getting smacked by a car.

We are to stop at these cross walks, but the students DO NOT EVEN look before they step onto the road. There has already been a fatality at one of these cross walks. What is it going to take for these, supposedly intelligent, students to get it.

THEY DO NOT OWN THE ROADS. More lighting is also needed at the cross walks--HEY WESLEYAN PUT some of that money to good use.
or do you want another student to get hurt or killed??!!

I realize that Wesleyan students are often oblivious to the danger of crossing the street. However, I often walk in the area and many drivers do not stop at cross walks to allow pedestrians to cross. Also, the stop lights on High are a mistake--they should be three and four way stop (signs). Full stops allow for eye contact between drivers and drivers and pedestrians and are more conducive to communication, courtesy, and ultimately to safety.

And please pick-up those red cups after the keg parties. You would think students at Wesleyan would bring their own re-usable cups to parties in 2010!

so true they feel they can just go on their merry way and not look just step out and yes sooner or later someone will get hurt, sad to think this goes on and on

I went as far as to call Weslyan to ask if they can put better lighting up at the cross walks so you can see better at night and my answer was its not up to us call the city of middletown so I take it they don't care too much about the students!!!!

It'll be Wesleyan'd fault when a kid is hit at night and the university gets blamed becasue of neglecting to work with the city on brighter lights. All of that areas dim yellow lighting should be replaced. There's no reason for it to not be well lit, especially with all the assaults that happen to the kids at night. There have already been kids hit this year, Wesleyan is just very good about keeping it quiet.
But yes, the kids could also watch for cars too efore strolling across the streets.

I would also like to mention that the average citizen should watch where they are goign at the various downtown intersections....i've had to stop at green lights mmore than I can remember for adults.

I live on High St and the students walk across the crosswalk at traffic lights usually on their cell phones and not watching traffic.
They think that the crosswalk is some sort of haven,and if they are in it they won't get hit,yet they jaywalk constantly.
What is wrong with these kids in 1st grade you are taught 2 things when crossing the street,1 look both ways before crossing and 2 the Red hand on the post means DON'T WALK!!!

This is nothing new. When I first moved to in Middletown 35 years ago, it was the same thing. I think it has more to the invincibility most people that age feel than anything else. I always drive near Wesleyan very carefully.

As a non-student who walks in this area frequently, I might point out the many drivers who seem to think 25 mph means 40 mph.

what do you mean, put up brighter lights? I think you may be getting a little carried away. Wesleyan students should be more careful and drivers should use caution wherever they drive.

I don't know why someone hasn't been killed. Dark nights, dark clothing and students who just step off the curb! A recipe for disaster.

I believe that someone HAS BEEN KILLED at one of the crosswalks on Cross St. A female WES student. maybe 5 years ago??

This area of town is unlike any other, and yet Public Works treats it in generic fashion. As a matter of fact, all the "improvements" of the past ten years or so at the interface of campus and city have had only one goal in mind: increased traffic flow. As a result the traffic is faster and heavier, and the aesthetic quality of this area is greatly diminished. The long wait at William and Church for the pedestrian light invites flagrant jay walking, and one can hardly blame the students for ignoring them. The area needs to be "tightened" to increase safety. The city should explore ways in which other universities have managed the interaction of traffic and students. Wesleyan should get involved, do some research, and participate in the redesign of the streets.

I don't know how many times i have almost hit someone beause they just walk out in front of my car at the last minute. Why should we have to caterer to Weslyan students. Just how hard is it to wait at a crosswalk.

I was walking with a stroller and still got ran into by the Wesleyan students. They need to pay attention !!!

I agree, most of the students just "assume" you will stop and they wonder into the street. After we had that big snow storm last week, I witnessed several cars literally sliding down the street, unable to stop! I also witnessed the students carelessly walking into the road, not paying attention to the drivers trying to control their cars so the students would not get hit. One of these days someone WILL get hit! Then it will be the drivers fault and not the students. FIX IT !!!!!!! Or at least inform them that thet DO NOT own the road.

I would recommend that the city focus on clearing walkways and sidewalks before clearing roadways--that should help to keep those pesky pedestrians off of the roads.

The problem is ongoing and definitely not weather - or snow related. These students just step off the curb into the street without breaking stride. And at night, they are ususally completely dressed in dark clothing making this an absolute nightmare for drivers. Even a brief PAUSE would make things so much better.

This is a college campus. A school zone. The traffic lights and walk signals are inappropriate for the area and maddeningly frustrating for students and pedestrians. The only resolution is to replace the lights with three and four way stops, so that all drivers must stop at intersections. This allows for eye contact and communication between all drivers and pedestrians. It works on Broad St.

I agree the problem needs to be fixed but some of the students act like they own the area & don't look when they cross. Geeze, my 3 yr old grandson even knows to look both ways. These so-called adults just keep walking, they don't even stop for a moment at the corners.

Completely agree. And these students look at you in your car like you are the one doing something wrong and glare at you when they walk in the middle of the road in front of your car.

It's that time again! The freshmen are coming back... look out for darting Wesleyan students who don't look both ways!!

"One can hardly blame students" who ignore the pedestrian light and jaywalk due to the lengthy wait? Actually, I do blame these jaywalking students who flagrantly, and without warning, walk into traffic. These student place themselves and others in danger. The issue is not with the design of the streets, but rather with the arrogance and attitudes of the students who appear to think they are entitled to do whatever they please. When I was a student at UCONN, campus police managed student and traffic interaction well. Students who jaywalked received tickets for $25, and I actually got a jaywalking ticket my first week at school. Streets were very busy on campus, but all students would wait for the crosswalk sign to change for pedestrians. UCONN is in a rural area. Wesleyan has more heavy traffic and is in a city. Students need to have common sense and follow traffic signals. Traffic shouldn't have to accomodate jaywalking students.

Wesleyan students have a death wish! Constantly stepping out into traffic without even trying to use the light system. Especially at midnight when they are drunk and trying to get to the food truck from the frat houses. Three different times I've had to slam my brakes because they come out of nowhere right into traffic with no warning! Friggin college education anad can't even push a freakin button, drunk or not stupid is as stupid does.
