Since moving into the area 6 years ago, I have been present for 5 accidents at this corner, two of which have been motorcycles. One injury was a fractured clavicle and, most recently, the fatal accident. At this time, there have been 3 accidents at this corner since Feb 11, 2024.
The many 'fender benders' that occur are at speeds that send one vehicle spinning, often to the tree on the west side of the road, putting pedestrians and property at further risk. If something is not done soon, undoubtedly, there will be another fatality.
This corridor is in need of IMMEDIATE attention!
I would like a 4-way stop to be installed and enhanced overhead street lighting for night crossing. This can be done quickly while waiting for the city to work on their Lincoln Ave enhancements.

Thank you for reporting your concerns about street safety in Alameda. The City is aware of the recent collisions and safety issues at this intersection. We are currently working on short-term quick-build improvements to address the safety concerns at this location. Additional long-term improvements will be included in the Lincoln/Marshall/Pacific Avenue Improvement Project.
In April 2023, the City Council endorsed a design concept for the Lincoln/Marshall/Pacific Avenue Improvement Project. The final design for the full project will be completed by the end of 2024. Staff has also been seeking funding for construction: unfortunately, a 2023 grant proposal for $20 million was unsuccessful but staff are continuing to seek funding in 2024. We have forwarded your report to project managers. More information at www.AlamedaCA.gov/LincolnMarshallPacific. Join the mailing list at www.AlamedaCA.gov/subscribe
At Lincoln and 9th, the concept includes a road diet with two motor vehicle travel lanes, a two-way left-turn lane as a center lane, buffered bikeways, concrete bulb-outs, and a pedestrian hybrid beacon (otherwise known as HAWK beacons) at the crosswalk. HAWK beacons arch over the roadway and require drivers to stop on red. On-street parking would be maintained except adjacent to the intersection. Other improvements throughout the corridor include lighting, street trees/green infrastructure, traffic signal upgrades, bus stop enhancements, stormwater best practices, resurfacing, and a roundabout at the Lincoln/Marshall/Fifth intersection.
On February 11, 2024, a motorcyclist died after driving on Lincoln at extremely high speeds and colliding with a vehicle at 9th St. The City will hold a post-collision site visit at the intersection and consider whether quick-build improvements can be installed in the meantime, while we await funding on the full Lincoln/Marshall/Pacific project. See www.alamedaca.gov/fatalcrashresponse.
Finally, 9th St is identified as a future Neighborhood Greenway in the Active Transportation Plan (adopted by City Council in December 2022), with prioritization to be implemented by 2025. This will be a traffic-calmed pedestrian- and bicycle-priority street (still open to autos). The crossing improvements at Lincoln would be crucial to this project as well. Your report will help inform the City of Alameda’s work to achieve our Vision Zero goal of eliminating traffic fatalities and severe injuries. Staff will retain your report and refer to it the next time we undertake a project on this street, whether it is pavement resurfacing or a corridor update. For selection of new safety improvement projects, the City refers to High Injury Corridors, equity indicators, Active Transportation Plan projects, and street resurfacing needs, augmented by Street Safety Concerns. See the links below for more information.
