With so much development in Journal Square and lower Heights, there appears to be ZERO regard for pedestrian safety. Complete lack of leadership. The ward councilman should retire.

This is the same situation as exists on Summit Ave both north and south of 139, forcing pedestrians to walk in the street at high traffic intersections.

Contractor is getting more cones today to make a pedestrian walkway so residents can walk safely around the construction site . Also these areas on Baldwin should be completed by either late today or early tomorrow for construction work .

Power Concrete Co. from Newark evidently has a contract to repair sidewalk corners at multiple intersections in the Heights.
I walked past 6 sites today. NONE have any provision for pedestrian safety.
Did Jersey City fail to write pedestrian safety into the contract?
I saw a Power Concrete truck with perhaps 50 extra orange barrels.
Why aren't these being deployed?

Outrageous. City should be ashamed for this.

When I walked my dogs this evening this corner was still roped off and we still had to walk in the street on Baldwin Ave, one of Jersey City's High Injury Network streets per the Vision Zero Action Plan. Seriously be ashamed.

Jersey City is knowingly endangering the lives of residents. Sounds like time for a law suit.

I walked past 4 sites today. NONE have any provision for pedestrian safety, and NONE have any of the traffic cones you claimed Power Concrete was going to acquire and use.

This photo shows the work on the west side of the street. Pedestrians are still being forced out into traffic with NO protection.

Why can't Power Concrete use the barrels and yellow caution tape to demarcate pathways for the pedestrians?

Apologize for the late response. I am working with the contractor to make sure more safety is involved around the construction work sites . Most corners have been poured with concrete and reopened already especially on Baldwin Ave . I am hoping to have most if not all corners on Baldwin Ave poured today and finished by tomorrow. Saw cutting has already been taken place around the corners and asphalt around them by weeks end . I’m having the crew work on get the corners reopens asap this week . Also be aware at the end of this summer most of these areas will be milled and repaved by our general asphalt contractor.

Does the contractor work for the city? Or does the city work for the contractor?

Instead of asking the contractor to ensure pedestrian safety, shouldn't it be priority one? Are we missing something here?

OP - May I suggest you email the Mayor and council persons at large and copy Paul Russo bringing this repeated issue to their attention and letting the know these kinds of things repeatedly occur and it is unacceptable.

Some cones finally showed up after the concrete was poured!

The asphalt in the roadway was removed near the poured curb, but there are tripping hazards at every corner.

There are NO ramps or quick patch to provide a smooth transition for wheelchairs, strollers, etc.

I was just told everything was asphalted a few minutes ago . Any drums or cones left behind will be picked up be today and tomorrow. All corners in the area should be fully reopened as of today.

In other words, "we did absolutely nothing to ensure safe pedestrian access during construction and now the construction is finished."

Do you see how that's a complete failure, Billy?

Our inspector has brought up these issues to myself and the contractor. I thank you all for bringing this to our attention as well. The City has asked the contractor to complete more ramps than usual in a tight window of time so that we are fulfilling all federal ADA compliance standards with concrete corners ahead of the Spring paving schedule. We will now pull back the volume of concrete work and put much more effort into the pedestrian elements you have brought up. There is a portion of time we will have to cross at the previous corner if the asphalt perimeter being cut and restored doesn't provide the space to also safely provide a walkway. All ramps in discussion have been safely reconstructed and all future reconstruction of corners will provide better pedestrian walkways as discussed and made clear to the contractor. Thank you all.
