Well these two roads reduce your expectations so that you're not disappointed when you tear the undercarriage out on Lower Thames and Spring Street. And how about the STILL unfinished intersection at the foot of Washington Square...anytime now on the traffic light...the temporary Stop signs appear to be permanent.

Half the problem is National Grid tearing up the streets and the City PW Department not inspecting the patch job afterwards. They should be held accountable to repair to the original condition but the City doesn't even bother to check their work.

If the pay of the Public Works Director was directly tied to the condition of the infrastructure under their responsibility, there would be a lot more incentive to maintain Newport in an acceptable condition.

I was traveling back and forth to Portsmouth yester on West Main and East Main and it absolutely ridiculous how bad the roads are in this area. You cant drive in the 2nd lane because of the drains that are lower than the street and the first lanes are all patched. I am lucky that I do not have to travel these roads daily, I can imagine the damage that we are doing to our cars. It is really unbelievable. Never have I lived in an area where the roads keep getting worse.

I can't agree more with the above posters! It's beyond me that the shoddy (I am being kind here) work is acceptable to anyone in this city, let alone the dept of Public Works.

Lets start by electing some new blood to the City Council, people who actually live here year round, drive on these streets; and care about our city, its infrastructure, and its future; not just the streets out on Ocean Drive, but all of them and the sidewalks also. These same folks have been there for a while....Time for a change!

Here, here! The mis-management of Newport has gone on too long.

Oh boy, where do I start - our roads are an EMBARRASSMENT to our city. Property owners, public and private, keep their properties in top shape (except for a few of the derelict houses on Spring and Mill St) why doesn't the city match the street conditions as well? Whatever happened to that long list of roads that were supposed to get fixed? You can barely drive down the side street to get to CVS (off Bellevue) and poor residents of Dixon street have had to deal with a terrible road surface for almost 20 years! And then only to find more terrible road conditions on the side streets leading down to lower Broadway when Touro St. was closed last week (I was hoping for a repave job - they need to address those sinkhole/manhole covers) I agree that the the PW Director and dept. should be held accountable. What a disgrace and disservice to our city/residents!

Come on down to the Point today. The National Grid road destruction champs have just about annihilated every cross road between Marsh and Van Zandt. They leave the road dug up, dirt and dust everywhere, and then have the freaking audacity to work over the night on a Saturday night to fix "an emergency leak". Funny how those emergency leaks last summer always fell on a weekend night too--can you say, "We like the overtime."? Worst of all the absolutely pitiful public works department in Newport NEVER is on site to maintain any semblance of quality workmanship.

Again, the solution: vote out every single City Council incumbent--if they can't maintain standards they need their walking papers.

The city can't even cut the grass, check Memorial Blvd in front of Eastons Beach we are growing hay again......and this is what we show visitors as they arrive here......the city is filthy

I have to agree with the above posters. My street was torn up a few weeks ago, and I figured they'd repave it when it was over. NOT! All we got was new patches over old patches, a storm drain caved in where a tractor drove over it, dust, filth, and just poor workmanship. I'm ashamed of this place. We should demand better.

I have to agree with all the above posts. I have to drive Brenton Road every day to get to Cluny and you would figure that with the road leading to a school private or otherwise the city would take some of their money and fix these disgraceful roads. Then I have to venture back through fifth ward to get to the Navy Base and the road crews felt instead of fixing the road by Morton Park they would just put two hideous orange cones to mark them so you would not drop an axel. Meanwhile you are traveling in the wrong direction on the opposite side of the road to try and get anywhere. Everyday is an adventure as to how much damage will be done to my car on these ridiculous streets. I agree. Kick the whole damn city council out and start over with people who actually care about this city. Newport is not just for the tourists. There are an aweful lot of people who live here year-round. We are unfortunately keeping our mechanics well paid while a bunch of unfeeling "fatcats" sit around on our dime and leave us with a web of one way, one lane, crater filled roads to get around on.

the city council is to worried about getting reelected than the infrastructure of the city. they need to make a descion mand get something done. The main roads into this great city are a joke, but fair street is new and tared,thats heavily traveled by tourist and emergency vechicles.
