What can we do to effect a policy change at the Department of Public Works with regards to bulk trash pickup?

If I own a property in New Haven, I should be able to schedule and pay for a bulk trash pickup. Right now that is not possible at DPW because I live in a different house in New Haven. Rather I have to show a photo ID with that EXACT property address on it. This promptly excludes a large number of property owners in New Haven who own more than one property! If I own a property and pay taxes, I should be entitled to a bulk trash pickup; it's really that simple.

What needs to be done to correct this illogical policy?

  • Lombard Ave And Blatchley Ave New Haven, CT - Fair Haven

The traffic signals at the intersection of Blatchley & Lombard have been OFF since October 7th. This is a busy intersection and the knee-high stop signs that were temporarily placed are NOT adequate to control this intersection, especially when they're blocked by parked cars. Keep in mind this is lawless Fair Haven, where a stop sign is a suggestion at best; a miniature one is just a joke. Please fix these lights as soon as possible! Thank you.

NH Parking Authority - please adjust the light timer for the bicycle parking area. It is getting darker earlier but the lights have not been adjusted to reflect this. A well lit bicycle area contributes to a safe bicycle area! Thanks.

  • Poplar St & Chatham St New Haven, CT - Fair Haven

"Lolo" was out again last night, very loud, up and down numerous streets in Fair Haven, including Poplar St. It was too dark to photograph, but at this point it's obvious who it is. NHPD, please do something about him; you know where he lives and apparently his last stint in detention was not enough of a deterrence.

  • Poplar St And Chatham St New Haven, CT - Fair Haven

Two dirt bikes, both red & white, operated up and down Poplar St tonight, between Lombard and Pine or further south. Drivers swerving and playing chicken with traffic, accelerating loudly, making it impossible to talk to anyone inside my own home. One rider positively identified as [removed] and the second driver was [removed] (95% certainty). Both have prior arrest records for this and it would be great if the NHPD could PLEASE do something about them--they know where they live! Police were called--once at the non emergency number and then a second time later when both riders blocked started circling in front of a neighbor's house, blocking their vehicle from leaving!

  • High Street & Wall Street New Haven, Connecticut - Downtown

The New Haven Board of Aldermen is on the verge of permanently selling several blocks of city streets, in the heart of downtown New Haven.

These are public spaces that have been held in common since the city was founded in 1638.

High and Wall Street are frequently used by pedestrians and bicyclists in the Downtown area and in nearby neighborhoods, as they navigate the city during the day and at night.

According to reports, there are no guarantees that the public would retain access to this area, which are among the most crucial public spaces in our downtown. Once they own the streets, Yale may gate off the area at night, or during the day, whenever they wish.

A local resident has created a Change.org petition asking the New Haven Board of Aldermen not to proceed with the sale. You can read about the issue in the New Haven Independent:
    http://www.newhavenindependent.org/index.php/archives/entry/aldermen_vote_to_sell_2_city_streets_to_yale/

Please learn more about the issue, and sign the petition if you agree. Contact your elected officials regarding your thoughts on the sale.
