There are several things that WE in the Hill can do about the drugs in the Hill. We can refer individuals that WE know are using drugs to referral programs like the LEAD (Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion) program, a community based law enforcement initiative that treats drug abuse, prostitution and other non-violent street crimes as more appropriately addressed by case workers and mental health experts than by police officers and prisons. WE in the Hill can stop turning a blind eye to the substance abuse that takes place right under our noses ... the teenagers who walk down the middle of the street or stand at the school bus stops smoking blunts or the old guys that hang outside the liquor store, or the young woman that has people coming in and out of her house all day and night. WE in the Hill can also work with the police to identify those individuals that we KNOW are selling drugs in OUR neighborhoods ... whether they are our neighbors, our tenants or our own children ... yes OUR children!!! WE in the Hill must stop having the attitude that 'I don't want to get involved', or 'it's not MY problem', or 'I wish SOMEBODY would do something'. WE in the Hill must consider establishing more Block Watches to monitor that activities in OUR neighborhoods and share information with other block watches in adjoining neighborhoods. WE see it everyday, on the corners, in and out of a particular house, in and out of a particular store. WE must be continuously vigilant in our reporting. Call Lt. Minardi and provide him with the information he needs to do his job. Ask him about notifying the narcotics division and what that entails. Building a case for narcotics takes a long time. But remember that the police and service agencies have limited resources, can't be everywhere and can only do so much ... WE in the Hill can do so much more! Thursday mornings at 10:00am the NHPD holds a COMPSTAT meeting at NHPD headquarters at One Union Ave ... the public is invited to attend. You should attend and listen to what the NHPD has to deal with and what they are doing. Then you would have a better idea of what WE in the Hill can do about the drugs in the Hill.
