moving violations east rock

Farnam Dr. and East Rock Dr. Drivers speeding and running stop signs is out of control. There has been no yellow line on either of these roads for a year. Biggest car wins coming through corners! (and then gets to run stop signs.) I have never seen any one ticketed on this road, and you can just sit there and watch the speeding and blasting through stop signs all day.

  • Has there been any progress on this? Have you contacted your Alderperson about this issue?

The city's complete streets policy was adopted unanimously this fall, and there are forms within the new manual for requesting changes like these.

Contact the city's transportation department and/or newhavensafestreets (at) gmail.com (a local advocacy group) if you need assistance requesting these types of changes to your street.

  • Unfortunately, enforcement only goes so far, and if you talk with police lieutenants in the area, they say they do not have significant resources for traffic enforcement across the entire police district.

Re-engineering intersections is the only way to control this type of reckless driving in the long-term, and is the approach used in other cities.

There are thousands of examples of re-engineering residential areas to be livable, calm, walkable, quiet streets, which can easily be accessed online.

Many European nations have top residential speed zones of 15-20 miles per hour, which is clearly a priority of neighborhoods and management teams in New Haven and hopefully can be accomplished over time using more progressive design standards.

At the same time, people need to keep bringing up the enforcement issue -- and ensure that adequate attention is paid to it, even if it is an incomplete solution.

If you go to New Haven Independent, there is a crime log that will show you exactly where M/V violation tickets are issued. Seems pretty clear from that that enforcement activity in this neighborhood is quite limited. Neighbors should be very concerned by the data on the log, and demand more attention to local quality of life enforcement.

Please contact newhavensafestreets (at) gmail.com if you'd like to work on addressing this with the Police Department. It is easy to change the situation in a small city like this, it just takes one or two persons to make the issue a real priority.

  • I posted this 411 days ago. Since that time, I have moved but was recently back to visit. Still the same as before. Very very sad, especially given the beauty of East Rock.

  • Months later...nothing changes. Good luck changing driver attitudes in CT. *WORST* place I have ever driven (including Europe and Asia).

  • This is an endemic problem across the entire city. Please sign the citywide traffic safety petition, which is currently linked to at www.designnewhaven.com. Contact downtownnewhaven@gmail.com or distribute yourself if you know of any individuals or community groups who wish to be supporters of this.
