At 1.15 this afternoon, Blue Line bus 29 ran a red light and came distressingly close to plowing into a friend of mine, who was walking with me -- we were both walking our toddlers home from nursery school, and had waited a ludicrously long time for the light to change so that we could cross safely. Having WAITED for the light, we then had the life scared out of us by having the Yale Shuttle barrel through the red light, honking his horn at us. Clearly this intersection needs serious help to improve pedestrian safety... and the Yale shuttle driver needs to be reminded to not go through red lights.

I take the shuttle and also work at Yale.
Yale recently hired a new bus company and although there are some great drivers my opinion is that more of them are not so great drivers as I too have had my own experiences.
Please visit the Yale Parking and Transit web site and report this incident to them: http://to.yale.edu/

I've been a pedestrian in this town for decades and I'm not happy with how people drive. But historically I've thought the Yale shuttle drivers were usually pretty good. I no longer have such confidence (though there are some Yale shuttle drivers who I really do think are extra-careful blah blah blah -- they are the exception rather than the rule).

Anybody get the number of that bus ???
Good luck trying to find a place to call and complain.
The Police WILL NOT pull these buses over. I watched them go thru the light at College and Chapel doing almost 40 mph while the Police are parked on the corner.
They also do not get stopped at DUI checkpoints for not having front marker plates which is against FEDERAL LAW. Maybe if New Haven loses some of the Fed's money for these checkpoints they'll be forced to treat all vehicles the same. I got a ticket for no front plate and then pointed out to the officer the several Yale Transit buses that just drove thru and he said oh well whatta gonna do ??
Yale is exempt from everything ans above the laws they make for themselves. Next time throw a rock at the bus window, maybe then they'll stop.

I reached out to Yale transportation and Yale's Office of New Haven Affairs and will let you know what I hear back. Thanks for reporting this. Over the years I've noticed that the Yale Shuttle has improved immensely in their safety. But clearly there is still work to be done. Thanks for reporting this.
