The City of St. Charles Public Parking Garage has steps that are boarded off and can't be used by the Public. Why aren't these steps repaired? It's been over a year since the garage "reopened." The public paid to have the garage remodeled, and it does not look nice. There are tire marks (skid marks) on the floor of the garage that is painted gray. It does not look like a newly remodeled parking garage. I took guests there over the weekend to park for the MOsaics Art Festival, and I was embarrassed of the "recently renovated" parking garage. Get the boarded-up steps fixed, clean it up, repaint or reseal the garage floor, maintain it to higher standards. The alley behind the garage is sketchy. This is one of the "entrances" to downtown Main Street. It looks terrible. Sad.

Why is a stairway and hallway adjacent to the City of St. Charles public parking garage owned by a private entity? This stairway/hallway looks like part of the City public parking garage.
Isn't it against fire code to have steps boarded up for over a year? That is a long time. This is a blocked exit for pedestrians and seems very unsafe. It also looks terrible.
Why were these steps previously accessible to the public and now they are in poor condition and boarded up? The opening to the stair "hallway" is open. Very odd!
Can't the City of St. Charles Public Works fast track getting the "owner" to get these parking garage steps fixed?

Thank you for your note, Mark. As stated above, this stairway is owned by a private entity. Public Works has spoken with the owner about these stairs. We will ask that our colleagues in Community Development also speak with the property owner.
This garage is a parking structure. It is going to show tire marks and skid marks. On occasion, a driver will have to apply their brakes and skid to avoid an accident. Resurfacing the floor is an expensive process so on occasion, the garage surface is cleaned. However, the surface cannot be cleaned before every event on Main Street and Riverside Drive. Doing so would result in unnecessary wear to the surface.
As always, we appreciate your comments.

I would appreciate an update from Community Development. I want to understand why the City is enabling and allowing a private entity to block a pedestrian entrance and exit to a PUBLIC parking garage. It is unsafe and ugly. There is cheap plywood blocking the crumbling stairs. Where is the accountability and code enforcement? There are legal implications.
The City of St. Charles parking garage is not well maintained. It is trashy looking...a hot mess. As a tax-paying resident who was asked to vote for Proposition P garage renovations, I am disappointed and surprised that it appears in poor condition.

Thank you for your message. As was stated above, Community Development issued a notice to the owner of the stairs to have them repaired or replaced. We appreciate your help with improving our City.
