If the person who wants the docking station removed.... can that person make a suggestion for a different location? I walked by it last week and it looks to be a great location for the bikes. Right by the bus, just across the street from the PATH. What better location can that person recommend.
Also, what is the reason for requesting removal? Did they bring to the local neighborhood association (Harsimus Cove)? Not sure whether or not the rest of the neighborhood will support this...
The reason for for the request was there is a limited space to park cars and with the station added , Spaces are being taken away. The suggestion was for Station to be near the Path Station across street near the Subway side.
Would that not interfere with the cabs stand / pickup area / buses offload, unload? Or are you suggesting across Columbus on the North Side near the PATH vs the South Side near the PATH? Again bus pickup. That leaves the current location or in front of Dunkin Donuts taking away the truck loading/unloading spaces. These four (4) corners each have issues on both north and south and east and west sides. Not a lot of wiggle room.
Hold on a moment, we don't dedicate enough public space to moving and stationary private vehicles? Furthermore, a good part of this docking station occupies an area where it is illegal to park. Just how much of this docking station extends into the legal parking area? And just how many spots are being "lost?"
Just doing a simple utilitarian analysis of the space that a bike rack takes up, in any given two hours, the city is far better served by placing a Citibike rack in the street and inconveniencing one driver of one vehicle in need of all that space than forcing the hundreds who will use that same space on the sidewalk over that same period of time. Given the math, all Citibike racks should be in the street.
"A recent study in Melbourne found that bike parking spaces are better at generating revenue than car parking spaces. In part, this is simply because bicycles take up so little space, and parking can provide more opportunities for paying customers to park right at a business’s front door."
Why would we inconvenience the thousands of Citibike members, bus riders and taxi riders so that we can preserve TWO parking spots. Let the cars park in the garage at Grove Pointe or 50 Columbus.
Just checked. Five metered spots were removed. Luckily there is a parking garage across the intersection and one at Grove Pointe. The problem isn't the growing number of bikes, the problem is the size and number of cars taking up public space.
Just came home from the PATH at Grove and the bikes look super great. Just right where they should be. A nice long line of the bikes ready for people to use as the come off the PATH. PERFECT. Just the right note to welcome residents and visitors.
I'm in agreement with Stephen, Aaron, Lorraine, etc. The extra bike parking makes a huge difference for bike riders to commute downtown for work or fun. And fewer cars on the road means less congestion for those who drive and park. Unless there is a better location at Grove, I'm in favor of the bikes staying put.
So far, it sees like the majority of residents would like the bycicles on Columbus and Grove to remain where they. I personally see no reason to move them either. Add my voice to that list.
