I'm glad you have lived here so long but not sure that minimizes anyone else's concerns.
As far as "rain does the same thing" is not accurate. That gutter system takes well over 2,000 square feet of rain collected and dumps it into one spot - causing flooding, erosion of the concrete alleyway, and more.
