This issue requires a traffic study that may take more than 6 weeks. We will provide an update as soon as the study is complete.

I'll agree that this intersection is confusing. It's bad enough if you live around here, but dangerous if you are lucky enough to be in it with someone who is not from around the area.

The intersection of five different points often results in confusion for motorist not familiar with the unique geometry. Five two-way and a one-way street intersect at this location and are controlled with a traffic signal. Since the road falls on the State Highway System, NCDOT designed the signal plans while the City maintains it. The large volume of traffic on Glenwood Avenue does not support converting the side streets to separate phases (split phase) as this would substantially increase the delay for Glenwood Avenue. City staff reviewed the reported crash history and did not find a pattern of crashes associated with the Whitaker Mill/Fairview movement. Therefore staff will pursue installing new directional signage and marking for both the Whitaker Mill and Fairview approach to help with any confusion. Whitaker Mill Road is currently marked with a combined through/right lane and a combined through/left lane with signage to supplement the markings. Fairview is currently marked with a through/right lane and a left only lane. Please allow a couple of weeks for this work to be completed.

Allowing street parking immediately adjacent to this intersection causes greater confusion and frustration to vehicles trying to navigate this area. Removing the street parking would allow for better traffic flow through this area and less confusion.

Parking is critical to the businesses in the area, particularly the angle-in parking on the northwestern leg of Fairview. In recent years a carefully negotiated parking pattern was established on the southeastern leg of the Fairview Road portion of this intersection. It involved the City Council, the neighborhood and the businesses. There is no parking on Whitaker Mill east of the intersection and some limited parking during certain hours of the day on Glenwood, but in during rush hour no parking here either. Glenn is a residential street and parking has never been a problem here.

My concern was directly related only to parking on Glenwood because of the confusion and frustration it causes to drivers going through this intersection. This is the only major route between the Crabtree area and downtown. And cars do park in those areas directly adjacent to the intersection during the times posted as "no parking". I personally will not frequent those businesses because of the frustration it has caused me.

There is already a sign but I think something needs to be done to maske it absolutely clear that you have to wait for the fairview traffic. I'm new to this area and it took me a while because normally a road that is 135 degrees from you is usually a side street and doesn't have the right of way. I'm not sure what kind of sign would be better but you have to be very careful or find another way
