The midge flies are out of control with the new water retention areas on Higley and Ocotillo There are thousands of flies where we cannot enjoy our backyard while it's still nice out I had an arborist here who was in shock and needs his team to wear scarfs so they don't inhale them while working on my trees! The fogging is not cutting it We need to know how to get this fixed before it turns into mosquitoes and we have a much bigger issue on our hands.

We understand the midge flies at and near the South Recharge Facility have become a nuisance. The additional basins we constructed have been a significant help with managing the large volumes of reclaimed water we receive during the winter. However, this spring has been abnormally both cool and very wet. This delayed the seasonal switch of reclaimed water being delivered to customers, rather than recharge. The Recharge staff has been treating the basins with larvicide, we have initiated additional fogging for the facility and adjacent streets, and in early March, ordered a new formulation of larvicide that should provide better coverage across the basins. That vendor has informed us that the winter weather in their region has delayed shipment of the chemicals. So, we are searching for additional vendors to complete the order as fast as possible. The last week of March, our staff also made changes in the distribution system to push a large portion of the reclaimed water to other recharge facilities and parks, away from the Higley and ocotillo area. We are aware of the irritating midge flies and appreciate your patience as we work to mitigate this problem.
