The fire department personnel were seen in their back yard, so evidently there was another complaint. Not sure what basis. The homeowner came up on to my back yard and banged and slammed on the glass on my back door, screaming and swearing. This has gotten out of hand.

Many Minneapolis residents enjoy a small outdoor fire during the summer and fall. If you’d like to have a fire in your yard, follow these City ordinances to keep our communities safe and livable:

Outdoor fires are permitted between • 9 a.m. and 10 p.m.

Keep fire small, less than three feet in diameter • and two feet high

Burn only untreated, unpainted, dry wood •

Fire must be at least 25 feet away from a • structure or combustible material and in a fire ring or pit with edges more than six inches high

Have a hose or fire extinguisher present•

Postpone your fire when the wind • exceeds 10 mph

To report an illegal or unsafe fire, call 911.

26th st e, 38th ave. 12:05 am, too smoky to open windows. No wind so probably nearby.

July 3, 12:30 AM, excessive woodsmoke, impossible to open windows without having it fill the house. Smells like wet wood. We have to run air conditioner and air cleaning equipment in order to be able to breathe safely. Don't tell me to call 911, because sending a fire truck to our address would accomplish nothing. This is ridiculous. The city has to develop a better way to pinpoint and enforce the recreational fire ordinance.

Wood Smoke again - I was told Mpls. gov't makes no recording of these complaints to log the level of the problem. I'm told I have to report to 911 and have the fire department come out with a truck.
This is ridiculous. There has to be a better way to document and enforce this ordinance. Please forward this message to Dan Huff.

Sunday PM/Monday AM (7/24-7/25) Our house was surrounded by a rank woodsmoke smell, mixed with a portapotty odor(really, like a heavy chemical portapotty odor)--lasted from 11:00 pm through 8:00 am. Totally unable to open windows.

1. Definition:– A recreational fire is a small outdoor fire, burning approved material for pleasure, religious, ceremonial, cooking, warming or similar purposes. A recreational fire may be in the open,
In a freestanding fire place or chiminea. This policy does not apply to barbeque grills, incinerators,
barbeque pits or any other appliance or burning otherwise specifically regulated by the MSFC.

a) Size – Small fires less than 3 feet in diameter and 2 feet or less in height are permitted.


b) Location – Recreational fires shall not be located within 25 feet of a structure or combustible
materials unless contained in a fire ring, barrier, or pit. Conditions that could cause a fire to
spread within 25 feet of a structure shall be eliminated prior to ignition. A surrounding
fire barrier of non-combustible material that is at least 6 inches in height must be used.
A fire pit must be at least 6 inches deep. The size of the fire prior to ignition must meet the requirements listed in #1. General provisions also apply.

2. General Provisions:

a) Materials – Only unpainted wood, which has not been treated with chemicals or
preservatives, coal or charcoal may be burned. Open burning of rubbish is prohibited.

b) Fire extinguishing equipment – There shall be at least 1 means of extingushing the
fire, Located near the fire. Buckets with 2-1/2 gallons of water, shovels, garden hoses or a fire extinguisher with a minimum 4A rating shall be readily available for use at recreational fires.

c) Attendance – Every recreational fire shall be constantly attended by a competent
person Who is at least 18 years of age. The Fire shall be completely extinguished before leaving the scene.

d) Hours – Recreational fires shall be conducted between the hours of
9:00 a.m. and 10:00 P.M.
f) Discontinuance – The Minneapolis Fire Chief, authorized Minneapolis Fire Department
personnel, and Minneapolis Police Officers have the authority and duty to enforce Minneapolis
Ordinance Title 9, Chapter 178. Recreational fires be immediately discontinued if such fires are determined by MFD or MPD personnel to constitute a hazardous condition.
g) Non Compliance - Failure to comply with these provisions may result with a citation and may be a chargeable offense. e) Wind Conditions - Recreational Fires Shall Not be Conducted In Winds in Excess of 10 MPH.

Recreational fires are ordinance driven. Ordinance allows for recreational fires within certain parameters. You may wish to contact the City Council if you want them to changes to city ordinance.
